The frame rate is stuttery and clunky with Minor Drops here and there you do get used to it but it's not what you'd expect. The load times are long too which is a shame.

🧠 The Premise

You are Styx the goblin thief. Master of stealth, your goal is to obtain all the quartz you can hidden throughout a world on the brink of war

📖 Story

The story throws Styx into a predicament where he needs to obtain Quartz crystals hidden across a semi open world. You are pitted against, Humans, Elves and Orcs. You have your own crew and ship with 3 main maps to navigate around finding the hidden quartz crystals.

You are pitted against, Humans, Elves and Orcs. You have your own crew and ship with 3 main maps to navigate around finding the hidden quartz crystals. You crew consists of Helledryn, Djark, Irving and Jasper. Some of these characters offer side missions along the way too.

Coming into the series as a 1st time player honestly I didn't care too much for the characters, whilst I wanted to like them they all feel like tropes and unoriginal it's also not that griping.

🎮 Gameplay

After unlocking the airship in your first mission, you're tasked with finding crystals hidden aorun 3 semi open world maps. These maps are semi open world as you need certain abilities to be able to transition into the next part of the map. The stealth is rewarding and the maps are well laid out with a plethora of options for you to choose from in how you approach the mission. Combat on the other hand is clunky, whilst stealth takedowns are great if you get caught out then evading the enemies and defending yourself is pretty mediocre. The enemy AI is flawed and to be honest frustrating.

🎯 Gameplay Strengths

The stealth is fun, hiding bodies and setting traps is great when they pay off. The're a plethora of upgrades and abilities to help too which is always and bonus. Some unlocks are huge benefits other's small and not that much help.

🎨 Art & Visuals

The medieval punk theme is ok to be fair it works well with the hidey holes and map layout. To be honest though it's colour pallet is a little drab at points with a short draw distance meaning i wasn't not overly wowed. this is in part due to the vertical issue i mentioned before. the game has so many layers above and below you it can't wow you with what's in the near and far distance.

Bugs, bugs, bugs there's quite a lot of bugs whilst they're not game breaking they are fun breaking.

🗺️ Level Design

The 3 worlds are a vertical labyrinth of chaos. To be honest there's too much verticality and not enough flat open space that's difficult to traverse you can essentially go over under and through everything.

🎵 Music & Sound

The background score is solid but nothing standouts as phenomenal.

Styx is funny, he's got a dry sense of humour but it feels too staged rather than random, there are lot's of small conversations to be heard with the various npc's. They're well done and add bits to the immediate story but they missed a trick here as Styx could have narrated a lot more around these moments.

🏆 Final Verdict

Styx isn't a bad game but it ultimately doesn't feel like it was built for this generation of console. The bugs whilst minor are frustrating when coupled with ridiculous fall damage and lopsided NPC A.I. mean that at it's highest of highs this game is a hoot and you feel like the goblin king but at it's lowest of lows it feels like a gremlin in your game.

If you wait i'm sure lots of these issues will be patched up however for the trilogy game it's a big disappointment. If you're invested in styx and stealth games you'll have fun but it can be clunky.
